See our shipping
page for information about shipping times and charges.
Are all your exterior shutters sold unfinished?
Yes. Our shutter are only sold unfinished
and must be either stained or painted prior to installation.
How and where are your shutters made?
Our exterior shutters are hand-crafted
from incense cedar milled in Southern California. Joints
are glued and doweled on 1" centers for strength and
durability. The shutters are sanded and ready to finish
upon receipt. All of our products are made in the United
States of America.

Why Incense Cedar?
The outstanding durability and resistance
to decay of Incense Cedar makes it ideal for exterior use
where moisture is present. This wood gives long service
with little maintenance in such applications as mud sills,
window sashes, sheathing under stucco or brick veneer construction,
greenhouse benches, fencing, poles, trellises, and shutters.
Incense Cedar is also used extensively for exterior siding
because it is dimensionally stable and holds paint well,
in addition to being durable. Oh, yes, and bugs hate it!
How do I select hardware for my outside shutters?
Your hardware
decision is partly dependent on the opening of the window
and partly on your style preference. Shutter hinges are used to swing shutter panels open and closed. Shutter
dogs (tie backs), shutter
bolts, and ring pulls offer
functional and attractive ways of securing your shutters.
Select the lag mount, plate mount, or sill mount option
based on the type of building exterior to which you will
fasten your exterior hinges and shutter dogs.
Are other shutter styles available?
Raised-panel shutters and sizes in excess of our standard widths and heights are available upon special request when
the total order size exceeds 50 panels. Please call or fax
for more information.
How do I determine my exterior shutter panel sizes?
To determine each shutter panel size, first measure the width of the window opening. Then, divide the width by two to determine the approximate width of the desired shutter panel. The height of each shutter panel should be the full height of the window opening.
If your shutter panels will be functional (the shutters will open and close), the panel size is critical for proper fit. It may be necessary to order a slightly larger shutter panel and trim it down to achieve the desired size.
If your shutter panels will not be functional (the shutters will not open and close), it is necessary only to approximate the shutter size.
How much can shutters be trimmed?
You can safely trim 1 inch from the bottom
and 7/16" from each side. The top should not be trimmed
as you might cut into a dowel. See individual shutter detail
pages for further instruction.
How should shutters be painted?
The tannin (oil) in incense cedar is what
makes it such a good wood for exterior shutters. It helps
prevent moisture penetration and bugs hate it. However,
you should not leave your shutters unprotected. Rather,
it is best to finish the shutters before installation so
all surfaces can be fully covered. While paint can be brushed,
it is recommended that it be sprayed. Most house painters
will spray shutters with their airless spray systems for
latex paint.
We recommend a primer coat of an oil-based
primer tinted as close to the final color as possible. The
oil penetrates into the wood, offering better protection.
It can be applied in a much finer mist, thereby reaching
between and around louvers and into seams, joints and corners.
The top two coats should be a premium-grade exterior latex
paint. A topcoat of exterior latex paint will not chalk
or fade like an oil-based paint. If you use shutter caps,
paint them as well since the top edge of shutters is the
most vulnerable to moisture penetration.
Shutters should be mounted to the building
with at least a ½" spacer between the back of the panels
and the building to allow for adequate ventilation. If not
using hardware, use rust proof screws sunk flush to the
wood. Paint the screw heads following installation.
Can your shutters be stained?
Yes, but painting is recommended. An
opaque finish prevents light rays from penetrating the finish
and breaking down the wood fibers. If you do stain your
shutters, use finishing products designed specifically for
outdoor or marine use – and be prepared to do more maintenance
on your shutters to keep them looking good.
Are installation instructions available?
Every installation is different. We recommend
the exterior shutters not be placed flush
to the wall since moisture can get trapped behind the shutter
panel. Whether installed on hinges or not, there must be
air space behind the shutter to avoid trapped water. We
also recommend that you include a shutter cap on top of
your shutters to protect the shutter panel from water damage.
Other than that, we make no specific recommendations for
installation.
