Exterior Shutter Construction and Definitions

SIDE STILE
Vertical bar found along either side of a shutter panel. All ShutterLand exterior shutters are 2" wide (which may be trimmed to 1-9/16") by 1-1/8" thick. Side stiles are glued and dowled to the top, bottom, and divider rails.
TOP RAIL
A horizontal bar at the top of the shutter panel. All ShutterLand exterior shutter panel top rails vary between 2-7/8" to 4", depending on the shutter style. Rails are glued and dowled to the side stiles.
LOUVERS
Slats contained within a shutter panel. All ShutterLand exterior shutters are made with fixed louvers with a width of either 1-1/4” (Style S) or 1-3/4” (Style W).
DIVIDER RAIL
A horizontal bar that creates top and bottom louver sections. Divider rails are optional on all ShutterLand exterior shutters. Divider rails are 2-1/4" wide by 1-1/8" thick for Style S shutters and 3" wide by 1-1/8" thick for Style W shutters. Rails are glued and dowled to the side stiles.
BOTTOM RAIL
A horizontal bar at the bottom of the shutter panel. ShutterLand exterior shutter panel bottom rails are fixed at 4-3/8" on all styles and can be trimmed to 3-3/8". Rails are glued and dowled to the side stiles.
LOUVERS
Slats contained within a shutter panel. All ShutterLand exterior shutters are made with fixed louvers with a width of either 1-1/4” (Style S) or 1-3/4” (Style W).

Exterior Shutter Terms

Bottom Rail A vertical bar across the bottom of a shutter panel - 4-3/8 " wide x 1-1/8" thick on all shutter panels, and may be trimmed to 3-3/8". See above.
Divider Rail A vertical bar that creates top and bottom louver sections. A divider rail is optional on all shutter panels. See above.
Exterior Shutters Shutters constructed for use on the outside of a building or structure. Exterior shutters are generally built from materials that naturally withstand the outdoor environment.
Finish Paint or Stain. Unfinished is without paint or stain. All ShutterLand shutters are sold as unfinished panels.
Functional Proper shutter hinges allow shutters to swing open and closed. Non-functional shutters are secured directly to the building for aesthetic purposes only.
Hardware Used to attach exterior shutters to the outside of a building. Shutter hardware can be used to make shutters functional. References shutter caps, hinges, pintles, shutter dogs, bolts, and ring pulls.
Incense Cedar Ideal wood for building exterior shutters and for use in other exterior construction. The wood resists decay, requires little maintenance, finishes well, and the aroma deters bugs.
Joint The joint between a stile and rail is glued and dowled on one inch centers for strength.
Louver Horizontal slats contained within a shutter panel. All ShutterLand exterior shutters are made with fixed louvers with a width of either 1-1/4” (Style S) or 1-3/4” (Style W). Louver profiles shown on shutter style page.
Made-to-order ShutterLand offers over 900 sizes in each style. Once an order is received it is made to the sizes and specifications received.
Panel A single shutter. The picture above shows a single shutter panel. ShutterLand shutter panels are 1-1/8" thick.
Shutter Cap A cap that fits over the top edge of an exterior shutter to protect against moisture damage. It can be painted the same color as shutters. ShutterLand shutter caps are made of bonderized (corrosion-prevention coat) galvanized steel.
Side Stile A vertical solid bar on a shutter panel found along either side of a shutter panel - 2" wide x 1-1/8" thick on all shutter panels. See above.
Style ShutterLand currently only manufactures fixed louver shutter panels, with and without divider rails.
Tilt Bar A vertical bar used for adjusting the louver position. A dummy tilt bar may be used to give fixed louver shutters the appearance that the louvers will rotate.
Top Rail A vertical bar across the top of a shutter panel. See above.
